Professor Deanna Kemp is an international researcher focused on the social dimensions of mining. She is Director of the People Centres – the Centre for Social Responsibility in Mining (CSRM) and the Minerals Industry Safety and Health Centre (MISHC) – part of the Sustainable Minerals Institute (SMI) at The University of Queensland (UQ). She provides research leadership across the two centres and is a research-active director for CSRM. 

Deanna specialises in industry-engaged social science that bridges company and community perspectives on extractive industries. Particular areas of interest include company-community conflict, displacement and resettlement, and human rights and development challenges. She also has a strong interest in the health, safety and human factors aspects of mining; including people-related issues of new mining technologies.

The strength of her research stems from direct engagement with the extractives industry, mine-affected communities, civil society groups and government. With an exceptional track record of negotiating university-industry research on cutting-edge topics, Deanna is one of few people who combine practice and scholarship in this area. She is able to access change makers within the industry to sustain critical dialogue to improve social performance. She is regularly engaged to undertake independent social studies, provide strategic advisory work, and deliver training and education.

Deanna publishes widely, authoring book chapters, scholarly articles, educational and industry guidance publications and reports. She has led numerous social performance assessments at mining operations around the world; and is regularly asked to present at international conferences. She has co-authored a book, “Extractive relations: Countervailing power and the global mining industry,” published by Greenleaf.

Deanna represents the People Centres on SMI’s Research Committee, serves on the Board of Trustees for the Institute for Human Rights and Business (IHRB), the New Member Review Panel for the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM), and was recently appointed a Senior Associate of the Cambridge Institute of Sustainability Leadership. She is a member of the International Association of Impact Assessment (IAIA).

Before her academic career, Deanna held senior positions in the mining industry, working in corporate and operational roles at BHP Billiton, and as an advisor to a number of other global resources companies. She has also collaborated with international non-government organisations—including Oxfam—on industry-related campaigns and capacity building programs.

Deanna holds a PhD from The University of Queensland where she studied at the School of Social Work and Applied Human Sciences. She also holds a Masters of Social Science by research from RMIT University and a Graduate Diploma in Human Resources and Industrial Relations from Griffith University. Her undergraduate degree is a Bachelor of Business majoring in communication studies from the Queensland University of Technology (QUT).
