Biography

Rupert Cook is an independent scholar and journalist focusing on the extractive industries, based in Madagascar. He is the lead author of what is to date the most comprehensive study of gold and gemstone ASM in Madagascar.  Prior to becoming a researcher and analyst, Rupert was an award-winning journalist, working in 25+ African countries, with a particular focus on the Great Lakes, western Africa, and Horn of Africa regions.  Much of his work was focused on the nexus between conflict, poverty and extractive industries.  Among his current interests are the transformative effects of mining’s environmental and socio-economic impacts on local communities, and the issue of sustainability, traceability and certification systems in mineral supply chains. He is a graduate of the University of Cambridge UK.
