Theme: Cumulative Impacts

The coal industry operates in the context of competing land-uses that are generating community concern. In the last decade a range of planning and policy instruments and new institutions have been introduced to manage the cumulative impacts of coal and other mining, but it is unclear how these could function to manage multiple industries. This study will document and assess recently adopted policies and practices intended to provide more effective management of cumulative impacts by operators, various levels of government and co-existing industries.

Project Aims

  • To enhance the capacity of the industry to respond to community expectations in regions with competing and mixed land uses
  • To provide assistance to industry and government in implementing new measures intended to ensure consideration and management of cumulative impacts of mining
  • To make recommendations about the use of various institutions and policy instruments for effectively assessing the combined and interacting impacts (positive and negative) of multiple co-existing industries on nearby communities
