China’s just transitions: reviewing lessons learned and approaches to social sustainability assessment

This report presents the case for a just transitions focus in China’s efforts towards decarbonisation. It provides an account of diverse social, cultural, economic, and ecological linkages with coal in China. To navigate these dependencies and linkages effectively and sustainably, the report synthesises lessons from global coal transition experiences. It also reviews key sustainability assessment frameworks applied to assess social impacts across various industrial and geographical contexts. Finally, the report summarises their suitability to, and relevance for, China’s energy transition.
